Enlightenment in Jesus Christ
What It Means To Be Born Again Part 8 is part of the series of post on what it means to be born again. This post deals with enlightenment. The concept of enlightenment as taught in other faiths are far removed from what the Bible teaches about enlightenment.
In Heb. 6:4, 5, 6 the apostle Paul says: “ [Heb. 6:4] For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, [Heb. 6:5] And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, [Heb. 6:6] If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.”
From Heb. 6:4,5, 6 we can learn the following Six Aspects of Enlightenment by the Holy Spirit (Holy Ghost) of God in Jesus Christ:
1. Those Who Were Once Enlightened
The words “those who were once enlightened” in Heb. 6:4 refer to those who saw the Light of the Glory of God with the Clouds of Heaven when they received the Holy Spirit.
Heaven is the place where the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ has His Throne. In Gal. 4:26 the apostle Paul says: “But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all.” This “Jerusalem which is above” is more commonly known as Heaven.
The Clouds of Heaven from that Holy City Jerusalem above are not the same as the clouds of our planet earth. They are clouds of fire that glows like burning coals –without the black patches of glowing coals.
The Clouds of Heaven also has the brightness of the rainbow all about it. Ezek. 1:28 says: “As the appearance of the bow that is in the cloud in the day of rain, so was the appearance of the brightness round about. This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the LORD. And when I saw it, I fell upon my face, and I heard a voice of one that spake.”
This is how the apostle Paul describes being enlightened by the Holy Spirit in 2Cor. 4:6 (LEB): “For God who said, “Light will shine out of darkness,” is the one who has shined in our hearts for the enlightenment of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.”
The apostle Peter also describes enlightenment by the Holy Spirit in 2Pet. 1:19, saying: “We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts.”
2. Have Tasted of the Heavenly Gift
We also learn from Heb. 6:4 that those who were once enlightened have tasted of the Heavenly Gift. To have tasted of the Heavenly Gift means that those who were once enlightened have seen and experienced the Light of the Holy Spirit in the Glory of God.
In Christianity, you are enlightened when you receive the Holy Spirit. Receiving the Holy Spirit is part of being born again. You cannot be born again if you do not receive the Holy Spirit.
Acts 10:45 testifies further: “And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.”
From Acts 10:44, 45 we can learn that when the Holy Spirit falls on you, it is also known as the Gift of the Holy Ghost being poured out upon you. This Gift of the Holy Ghost is that Heavenly Gift that the apostle Paul refers to in Heb. 6:4.
3. Made Partakers of the Holy Ghost
You are made a partaker of the Holy Spirit after you have received the Holy Spirit by being enlightened. You are a partaker of the Holy Spirit when you fellowship with the Holy Spirit in the Light of the Glory of God.
We can learn about this Heavenly Gift in Acts 10:44, 45. Acts 10:44 testifies that the Holy Spirit fell on those present while the apostle Peter was still speaking the Word of God.
When you are enlightened by the Holy Ghost you inherit the Light of the Glory of God in Jesus Christ. The Light of the Glory of God in Jesus Christ is known in the Bible as the inheritance of the saints in light.
In Col. 1:12 the apostle Paul gives thanks unto the Father, “which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light.”
4. Have Tasted the Good Word of God
In Jer. 29:8, 9, 10 we learn that the children of Israel were taken captive by Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon. The Word of God was then sent via a letter by Jeremiah the prophet to the residue of the elders of Israel in Babylon.
Jer. 29:8, 9, 10 testifies: “[Jer. 29:8] For thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Let not your prophets and your diviners, that be in the midst of you, deceive you, neither hearken to your dreams which ye cause to be dreamed. [Jer. 29:9] For they prophesy falsely unto you in my name: I have not sent them, saith the LORD. [Jer. 29:10] For thus saith the LORD, That after seventy years be accomplished at Babylon I will visit you, and perform my good word toward you, in causing you to return to this place.”
From Jer. 29:8, 9 we can learn that Israel was deceived by its false prophets and diviners through dreams and visions. This is why their God Jehovah made the king of Babylon triumph over them.
We can also learn from Jer. 29:10 that the Good Word of God is every promise of blessing and deliverance that God made to Israel.
After you are enlightened by receiving the Holy Spirit, you will taste the fulfilment of the Good Word of God through Christ Jesus.
The Good Word of God in Christ is only fulfilled in the Name of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Acts 4:12 testifies that: “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.”
All the promises of God unto you in Jesus Christ are yes, and amen, unto the Glory of God by us (2Cor. 1:20).
5. The Powers of the World to Come
The “Powers of the world to come” is the poGer and might of the Light of the Glory of God in Jesus Christ, and is also known as the Power of God. The “World to come” is the Kingdom of God.
In Mark 12:24 the Sadducees asked our Lord Jesus Christ about marriage in the resurrection. Mark 12:24, 25 recounts: “ And Jesus answering said unto them, Do ye not therefore err, because ye know not the scriptures, neither the power of God? For when they shall rise from the dead, they neither marry, nor are given in marriage; but are as the angels which are in heaven.”
We are called to be strong in the power and might of the Light of the Glory of God in Jesus Christ.
The apostle Paul teaches in Eph. 6:10: “Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.”
When you are enlightened by the Holy Spirit you will taste the power and might of the Light of the Glory of the Kingdom of God in Christ Jesus.
6. Renew Unto Repentance
To be renewed unto repentance means that your soul is reborn by being translated from life in the light of darkness to life in the Light of Eternal Life in the Glory of God in Jesus Christ. This is what King David refers to when he says in Ps. 23:3: “He restoreth my soul.”
The entire creation of God was subjected to life in the power of Satan because of Adam and Eve’s transgression. The power of Satan is a veil with a light that changes to darkness, and leads to death. It is that light that we see in our usual dreams and visions.
The overarching will of God for your soul is to be restored unto the Light of Eternal Life. The Light of Eternal Life is only in Christ Jesus. Restoration unto the Light of Eternal Life is only possible through faith in our Lord Jesus Christ.
In John 3:6, 7 our Lord Jesus Christ says, “That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.” To be born again in Christ Jesus is a spiritual rebirth.
