This is Part 7b of a study based on Eph. 2:1-3 called “What it Means to Be Born Again”. This Part of What it Means to Be Born Again deals with the difference between the appearance of the spirit of wrath and the Holy Spirit.
Eph. 2:1-3 reads, “And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.”
Eph. 2:1-3 outlines seven facts about our spiritual death before we are born again in our Lord Jesus Christ. In Eph. 2:1-3 we learn that before being born again:
1) Believers were dead in trespasses and sins. (Part 1)
2) Believers use to walk according to the course of this world. (Part 2)
3) The course of this world is according to the prince of the power of the air. (Part 3)
4) This spirit of the prince of the power of the air now works in the children of disobedience. (Part 4)
5) Believers dwelt in the lusts of their flesh. (Part 5)
6) Believers fulfilled the desires of the flesh and of the mind. (Part 6)
7) Believers were by nature the children of wrath. (Part 7a, and continued in this part 7b)
In “Children of Wrath” I explained that the Tree of Life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil are two separate spirits created by God (Gen. 2:9). The Tree of Life depicts the Holy Spirit of Eternal Life and is known as the Spirit of Life (Rom. 8:2).
The tree of the knowledge of good and evil depicts the spirit of the wrath of God, which is Satan with the light of death. The spirit of wrath is a spirit of deception and destruction. So, we can understand that the wrath of God is not with the Holy Spirit of our resurrected Lord Jesus Christ.
When Adam and Eve believed the devil’s lie in Gen. 3:1-6, they inherited the spirit of the devil with its nature of wrath. We inherited the spirit of wrath from Adam and Eve. Hence, we are by nature the children of wrath (Eph. 2:3). It is for this reason that we need to be born again by the Holy Spirit of our Lord Jesus Christ – to be freed from the spirit of wrath and its nature.
This post deals with the nature and the appearance of the spirit of wrath. You need to know how a spirit manifests in your life.
For example, you can only see a spirit when you are in the spirit. You are in the spirit whenever you have a dream or a vision. There is no other way that you can see a spirit, including the Holy Spirit.
Also, when you sense a spirit, you need to know that the presence of the Holy Spirit is not with goosebumps and sensations. The presence of the Holy Spirit is in strength. The strength of the Holy Spirit is known as His power and might (Eph. 6:10).
The Nature of the Spirit of Wrath
The nature of the spirit of wrath is exceedingly subtle in deceit (Gen. 3:1). The spirit of wrath is also murderously violent. The desire of the spirit of wrath is to destroy (John 10:10).
In Gen. 1:30 the Word of God says, “And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so.”
Before Adam and Eve’s fall every creature that God created dwelt in the Light of the Glory of God. The Light of the Glory of God produces Eternal Life. Hence, it is also called the Light of Life (John 8:12). The Light of the Glory of God is a place of peace (Phil. 4:7), and is known as the Way of Peace (Isa. 59:8; Rom. 3:17). Hence, before the fall of Adam every creature had a nature of peace, and ate vegetation, and not the flesh of another.
Because of Adam’s transgression the entire creation was driven from the Light of Eternal Life of the Glory of God (Rom. 8:20, 21). Adam and Eve’s nature was changed from peace to wrath when they were driven from the Way of Peace (Gen. 3:22-24). Thus, they became children of wrath by nature (Eph. 2:3). This nature of wrath was passed onto all of God’s creation. We remain children of wrath unless we are born again in Jesus Christ (Eph. 2:3).
With their new nature of wrath after Adam and Eve’s fall, man and all the animals that God created began to slay and eat each other.
Isa. 11:6-9 depicts how it was before the fall of Adam and Eve, and how it will be after the coming of Christ.
The Appearance of our Lord Jesus Christ
In Matt. 24:29 our Lord Jesus Christ prophesies, “Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken.” Rev. 12 sees the fulfilment of this prophecy, with the powers of heaven in Rev. 12:9, 10 referring to Satan and his angels. Since then, the world and its dwellers have been living in the fulfilment of Rev. 12:12, and Christians in the fulfilment of Rev. 12:17.
In Matt. 24:30, our Lord Jesus continued, “And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.”
From Matt. 24:30 we can learn the following:
- The “Son of man” refers to the Holy Spirit of our resurrected Lord Jesus Christ. We also learn from 2Cor. 3:17 that our Lord Jesus Christ is the Holy Spirit.
- Hence, the sign of the Son of man is also the sign of the Holy Spirit coming in the clouds of Heaven.
- The words “Coming in the clouds of heaven” are a description of how our Lord Jesus Christ appears in a dream or a vision – with the cloud of Heaven. You can only see a spirit with your spiritual eyes through a dream or a vision.
- The word “mourn” is translated from the Greek word “koptō” which means to beat the breast in grief. Every person from every culture in this world will see the Glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. When they do, they will grieve when they recognize their spiritual error.
We err in our hearts when we mistake the appearance of Satan for that of the Holy Spirit. This is in line with Rev. 1:7. Rev. 1:7 means that every person shall see the Lord Jesus Christ in a vision. You cannot see a spirit with your physical eyes (1Cor. 15:50).
The Clouds of Heaven
The clouds of heaven are not the same as the clouds of our earth and universe. The “clouds of heaven” refers to the clouds of Heaven, that Holy City Jerusalem from above (Rev. 21:1, 2).
A Cloud from Heaven is a fiery, infolding cloud, with the glow of burning coals, and also the brightness of a rainbow on it (Ezek. 1:4). The cloud of Heaven also has a light shining inside of it. The colour of this light looks like the sun when it shines in its strength. This light also beams down onto the earth in a pillar of light.
This pillar of light is also the colour of the sun when it shines in its strength. It also has the brightness of the rainbow about it. The pillar of the cloud of the Glory of God is mentioned in the following verses of Scripture: Num. 12:5; Deut. 31:15; Neh. 9:19; Ps. 99:7.
Because the cloud of Heaven folds into itself as it moves, the movement of the Cloud of Heaven is like rolling tumbleweed when it moves. The Cloud of Heaven is peaceful when it is stationary. When it moves, it sounds like the elements of a storm – like a violent wind, and like thundering rolling waters (Acts 2:2; Ezek. 1:24).
This is how our Lord Jesus Christ invariably appears when he comes in a dream or a vision – with the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. This is also how He appeared in Rev. 1. This is also what the Apostle Peter refers to in 2Pet. 1:19. For More on the Cloud of Heaven Please Read the Glory of God and the Holy Spirit
The Appearance of the Spirit of Wrath
The spirit of the wrath of God is a spirit of deception and destruction. Hence, the works of the wrath of God is in a separate spiritual sphere to that of the Holy Spirit. Even though the devil will copy the works of the Holy Spirit, he can never imitate the appearance of our Lord Jesus Christ, which is in the Light of the Glory of God.
In Rev. 16:10 the devil and his kingdom was stripped of the Light of the Glory of God. Therefore, the devil cannot appear in the Light of the Glory of God. The Word of God also says that He will not give His Glory to another (Isa. 48:11; 42:8).
Because the kingdom of the devil does not have a light, Satan will fake a light when he appears unto you in a dream or in a vision. The devil will fake all sorts of light. However, he cannot fake the Light of the Glory of God in Jesus Christ.
Hence, the appearance of the devil, including his works and strength, and dreams and visions are illuminated by artificial lights of this world.
The lights of this world are the light of the sun, the moon, and manmade lights like, a fire, a lamp, etc. Therefore, some of our usual dreams and visions are in darkness, while others will be illuminated by the lights of this world. This is how the darkness of the devil changes into light.
The Light of Darkness
When the devil or one of his angels appears in a dream or in a vision, such a dream or vision is always in darkness. However, if the devil shows you something that happens during the day, then the dream or vision of the devil is illuminated with a light either of the sun, or a man-made light. Hence, the light of the devil is called the light of darkness.
For this reason our Lord Jesus Christ warns us to take heed that the light which is in us is not darkness (Luke 11:35). For, if the light that is in us is darkness, how great is that darkness! (Matt. 6:23).
Hence, we can also understand our Lord Jesus Christ’s description of repentance in Acts 26:18 as turning from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God.
In Acts 26:18 our Lord Jesus Christ tells the Apostle Paul why he is sent to the Gentiles, saying, “To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.”
From Acts 26:18 we can learn that:
- Sin is faith in the power of the devil and his darkness. Hence, we can only receive forgiveness of sins once we’ve turned from darkness to light.
- Darkness is the power of Satan, and light is the power of God. God is light, and in him is no darkness at all (1John 1:5).
- We are sanctified by faith in our Lord Jesus Christ once we have turned from darkness to light.
- Once we turn from darkness to the Light of the Glory of God we receive an inheritance with those who are sanctified by faith in Christ. This inheritance is also called the inheritance of the Saints in Light (Col. 1:12).
To turn from darkness to light means that you resist the dreams and visions that are not in the Marvellous Light of Christ (1Pet. 2:9).
God bless and guide you.
