What You Should Know about Being a Born Again Christian

Brian Visagie.com - What it means to be born again - Part 1 - Brian Profile ImageDid you know that just like the Hare Krishna Faith and Buddhism, and Hinduism, and other faiths teach enlightenment, so also Christianity teaches enlightenment? In Heb. 6:4-6 the Word of God says, “For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.” This post, What it Means To Be Born Again – Part 1, is the first in a series of posts on being born again in Jesus Christ, and will also cover how that in Christianity enlightenment is part of receiving the Holy Spirit and being born again.

In John 3:6, 7 our Lord Jesus Christ says, “That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.” For you to dwell in the Light of the Glory of God in Jesus Christ you need to know what it means to be born again. To be born again in Christ Jesus is a spiritual rebirth.

To be born again is not the commitment to embark on a strategy to cultivate new habits – like, not smoking, or not drinking, or not swearing, or not overindulging, etc. You don’t have to be born again to stop smoking or not be violent. God gave you willpower to control these habits. For example, if you want to quit smoking while deep down you love smoking, you will never quit smoking, no matter how hard you pray to get rid of the habit. On the other hand, if you truly dislike a habit, you will simply drop it.

The Creation of Your Spirit

As a human being you were born as a trinity – with a spirit, a soul, and a physical body. Your spirit belongs to the Almighty God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ – whether you are Christian, Buddhist, Islam, or whatever your faith and, irrespective of your age, your gender, your race, or your culture. Therefore, whosoever you are, your spirit is always with the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ and will return unto HIM upon your physical death here on earth. (Eccl. 12:5-7). For this reason, your spirit does not need to be born again.

In Gen. 1:26, 27 we read, “And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness…So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.” The “image of God” refers to the Spirit of God. This indicates that your spirit was created in the likeness of the Holy Spirit of the Almighty God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

The Creation of Your Body and Your Soul

Gen. 2:7 recounts the creation of the human body and soul, saying, “And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.”  After God formed the human body from the ground of the earth, He then breathed the soul (life) of man into the body of man. Hence, man became:

  1. An independent living being with a physical body made from the dust of the earth, and
  2. a Soul with its own will made from the life of the breath of the Holy Spirit of God, and
  3. Also a spirit with the intelligence and character of the Holy Spirit of Christ – Love is one of the characteristics of the Holy Spirit. Gal. 5:22, 23 call the traits of the Holy Spirit of God in Christ Jesus the “fruit of the Spirit”. (Also see Matt. 11:29)

Your soul houses your will and with the willpower of the mind of your soul it is your prerogative to decide what you want to do, what you want to believe, and who you want to believe.

Your Three Hearts

Your physical body has been created with a physical heart. Your spirit and your soul have no physical parts. Even so, the Bible refers to both your spirit and your soul as your heart. Eccl. 10:2 says, “A wise man’s heart is at his right hand; but a fool’s heart at his left.”  Your heart at the right depicts your spirit, with your soul as your heart at the left. And, when King David says in Ps. 16:8, “I have set the LORD always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.” he is referring to his fellowship with God in his spirit – his heart at his right hand.

While the spirit of every one belongs to God and cannot be possessed and /or corrupted by the devil, the soul of every living being has been subjected to Satan’s veil of death that is mentioned in Isa. 25:7, 8. Therefore, your soul can be blinded, and corrupted, and also seduced and guided, as well as being possessed by the devil or any of his spirits. (Mark 9:17, 18; 1Tim. 4:1)

The Death of Your Soul

Before Adam was seduced into desiring and believing in Satan’s light of death, his spirit and his soul were united, and both his spirit and his soul were clothed with the Light of Eternal Life in the Presence of the Glory of God. The same applies to Eve. At that time, their souls, and their minds, and physical bodies were spotless or, blameless as the Bible puts it in 1Thess. 5:23; 2Pet. 3:14. As a result of their transgression, or sin (that is, error) against the Will of the Word of God for their lives, the souls of both Adam and his wife were separated from their spirits and also from the Light of Eternal Life in the Presence of the Glory of God.

This separation of the soul of man from the Light of Eternal Life in the Presence of the Glory of God signifies the death of the soul of Adam, and also of the soul of his wife. This spiritual death was the fulfilment of the Word of God that warned Adam and Eve, “But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.” (Gen. 2:17).

When your soul remains in the light of Satan’s veil of death, then your soul is dead and clothed with the darkness of the light of the veil of death. When your soul dwells in the Light of Eternal Life in the Glory of God, then your soul is alive and clothed with the Light of Eternal Life in Christ Jesus. Your soul can only dwell in the Light of the Glory of God through Christ Jesus, who is the Brightness and the Light of the Glory of God (John 8:12; Heb. 1:3; Rev. 21:23).

Every living being in this world inherited this spiritual death from Adam and Eve, and therefore, now by nature dwell in the light of the veil of death and darkness. (See Rom. 5:12; 1Cor. 15:21, 22) When your soul dwells in the veil of death, you will by nature fellowship with the lights of this veil of death. You will fellowship with the lights of the veil of death when you have a dream or a vision which usually contains the lights of darkness, and then believe in that dream or vision and then seeks its interpretation. The interpretations of dreams and visions are exceedingly deceptive. For example, to the one sect a dream or vision of a dog would signify a spirit of gluttony, while to another sect a dream or vision of a dog would signify a spirit of violent physical and mental affliction.

The Sleep of Death

The lights of darkness from the veil of death usually appears in a dream or a vision that contains the sun and its light, the moon and its light, and any artificial light like, a fire or a lamp or an electric light. Fellowship with the lights of darkness is known in the Bible as “sin” and also as “iniquity” (Jer. 33:8). It is for this reason that 1John 1:8 says, “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.”

Therefore, when we rest during sleep, we are known to sleep in death and also to sleep in the night (Ps. 13:3 (verse 4 in AOV); 1Thess. 5:1-8). The Apostle Paul says in 1Thess. 5:6, “Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.” This means that we should not sleep the sleep of death by following the dreams and visions of the veil of death as others do, but we should watch against these dreams and visions of the sleep of death.

And so we can understand that if we dwell in the light of the veil of death then we sin and do the works of iniquity. Matt. 7:22, 23 warn, “Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.”

This sin and iniquity will prevail in our lives when we err and misunderstand that we are to seek and dwell in the Light of the Presence of the Glory of God in the Face of Jesus Christ. Hence, when we remain in the light of Satan’s veil of death then we remain spiritually dead – even though we may be able to work miracles like Jannes and Jambres in Ex. 11 and Ex. 12.

Ps. 82:5-7 says, “They know not, neither will they understand; they walk on in darkness: all the foundations of the earth are out of course. I have said, Ye are gods; and all of you are children of the most High. But ye shall die like men, and fall like one of the princes.” The term “one of the princes” refers to the fallen Satan who was rendered incapacitated by our Lord Jesus Christ. (Heb. 2:14)

The Consequences of Your Dead Soul

Your soul is your life and influences everything pertaining to your spiritual, mental, physical, and material life –whether positively or negatively. Referring to your soul (your heart to the left) the Word of God in Prov. 4:23 cautions, “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.”

If your soul remains in the fallen state that we inherited through Adam and Eve’s transgression, your physical body will suffer decay. This decay of your body is known in the Bible as corruption and manifests in our bodies as old age, disease, and also as physical death that leads to the ultimate decay of your body in the grave.

Before this fallen state of the soul of mankind, and before God shortened the lifespan of man, the Holy Spirit with the Light of the Glory of the Presence of God would strive to fellowship with the soul of man. Therefore, man could live up to the age of nine hundred and sixty nine years (Gen. 5). But, because the soul of man was, and still is, more inclined to fellowship with Satan’s light of darkness, God removed His Holy Spirit from man and shortened the lifespan of man to one hundred and twenty years. (Gen. 6:3)

In Rom. 6:23 the Apostle Paul describes the consequence of your soul dwelling in the light of the veil of death, saying, “…the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

Dead in Trespasses and Sins

In Eph. 2:1-3 the Word of God says, “And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.”

Eph. 2:1-3 Outlines Seven Facts about Spiritual Death before Being Converted and Born Again. Before being Born Again:

  1. Believers were dead in trespasses and sins.
  2. Believers use to walk according to the course of this world.
  3. The course of this world is according to the prince of the power of the air.
  4. This spirit of the prince of the power of the air now works in the children of disobedience.
  5. Believers dwelt in the lusts of their flesh.
  6. Believers fulfilled the desires of the flesh and of the mind.
  7. Believers were by nature the children of wrath.
1.     Believers were dead in trespasses and sins.

These trespasses and sins are not deeds like telling a lie or being dishonest. Lying and stealing are part of the works and fruit of the flesh as described in Gal. 5:19-21 and Mark 7:21, 22. Gal. 5:19-21 and Mark 7:21, 22 are in fact a description of the character of the devil, with the character of the Holy Spirit of our Lord Jesus Christ being described in Gal. 5:22, 23 as the fruit of the Spirit (See also Matt. 11:29).

This being “dead in trespasses and sins” is the spiritual death of your soul which we inherited through Adam and Eve’s sin against the Word of God. The trespasses and sins (or, transgressions) that cause the spiritual death of our souls are the instinctive belief that we have in our usual dreams and visions. Our usual dreams and visions are in the lights of the veil of death that we can read about in Isa. 25:7 and 2Cor. 3:15, 16.

Prov. 20:27 teaches that, “The spirit of man is the candle of the LORD…” According to this verse of Scripture, fellowship with the Holy Spirit is in your spirit and not in your soul. This is also in line with Rom. 8:16 where the Apostle Paul says that, “The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God.”

Separated from the Kingdom of Heaven and the Glory of God by the Veil of Death

Through the transgression of Adam and Eve every person born into this world inherited Satan’s veil of death. This spiritual veil separates your soul from your spirit and blinds your spiritual eyes so that you cannot see the Light of the Holy Spirit of the Glory of God in your spirit. 2Cor. 4:3, 4 (DRB) puts it this way, “And if our gospel be also hid, it is hid to them that are lost, In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of unbelievers, that the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should not shine unto them.” (See also Isa. 25:7; 2Cor. 3:14, 15)

In Gen. 3:23 we find how that after Adam and Eve’s transgression, they were driven out from the Kingdom of God and away from the Light of the Presence of the Glory of God. Thus, man inherited the veil of death over his soul and the devil gained control over Adam’s soul. And every person that is born into this world inherited this veil of death over their souls.

The veil of death can only be removed in Christ Jesus. (2Cor. 3:16) It is about this separation of your soul from the Light of God in your spirit that King David talks about when in Ps. 23:3 he says that God restores his soul and leads him in the paths of righteousness. This is also the gist of the Gospel of the Glory of God in Jesus Christ – to remove that veil of death from between your spirit and your soul and restore the union between your spirit and your soul through the rebirth of your soul. Thus, you will be able to dwell in the Light of the Glory of God in Jesus Christ.

The Kingdom of God inside of You

In Luke 17:20, 21 our Lord Jesus says, “…The kingdom of God cometh not with observation …for lo, the kingdom of God is within you.” This means that the Kingdom of God does not come with any visible signs outside of you, for the Kingdom of God is inside of you. The Kingdom of God in Christ comes with the Holy Spirit of our resurrected Jesus Christ. Therefore we can understand when the Apostle Paul says in Gal. 1:15, 16, “But when it pleased God, who separated me from my mother’s womb, and called me by his grace, to reveal his Son in me…” The Son of God, Jesus Christ, is revealed in you when you received the Holy Spirit. Here in Gal. 1:16 the Apostle Paul refers to when he received the Holy Spirit as he testified in Acts 9:4-6; 26:13.

You can only see the Light of the Glory of God around you when you are in the spirit and have a vision of God. This was also the case with the Apostle John in Rev. 1:10 and also with the Prophet Ezekiel in Ezek.1:1. You cannot see the Light of the Glory of God when you are in the spirit and have your usual dreams or visions. Whenever we have a spiritual dream or a vision then we are in the spirit. However, our usual dreams and visions occur in the spirit of the veil of death.

When you are in the spirit and you have a dream or a vision of the Holy Spirit of God, then you will see that veil of death lifted up from over your soul, and you will then also see the Light of the Glory of God shining from God’s Cloud of Heaven upon you, and all around you. The Bible describes seeing that veil of death lifted up from over your soul as seeing the “heavens opened” (Ezek. 1:1; Matt. 3:16; Mark 1:10; Luke 3:21; Acts 7:56; Acts 10:11).

When you study the Bible you will find that not every occasion of the dream and vision of the Holy Spirit is described as seeing the heavens opened. Nonetheless, the appearance of the Holy Spirit in a dream or a vision is invariably always with the heavens opened. For example:

  • In Matt. 3:16; Mark 1:10; Luke 3:21 when our Lord Jesus received the Holy Spirit, it is recorded that the Holy Spirit came with the heavens opened. But when this same incident is described in John 1:32 there is no mention made of the heavens opened.
  • Acts 10:11 gives an account of the Apostle Peter’s vision by the Holy Spirit of God, mentioning that he saw the heavens opened. However, later in Acts 11:5 the Apostle Peter describes the same experience without mentioning that he saw the heavens opened.

It is in your spirit that you will find the Light of Eternal Life in Christ Jesus from the Kingdom of God. Col. 1:26, 27 describes it as, “…the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints: To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.”

Your soul needs to be reborn so that it can be reunited with your spirit. For it is only then that you can fellowship with the Holy Spirit in the Light of the Glory of God by faith in Jesus Christ, who is the only hope for anyone to come unto the light of the Glory of God. The Holy Spirit only comes and fellowship with you in your spirit. King David says in Ps. 86:11, “Teach me thy way, O LORD; I will walk in thy truth: unite my heart to fear thy name.”

God bless and guide you.
