This study centres on the two trees that God created in the Garden of Eden as recorded in Gen. 2:9. These two trees (The Tree of Life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil) depict two spirits.
The Tree of Life depicts the Holy Spirit, and is also the Prince of Peace. The tree of the knowledge of good and evil depicts the spirit of the wrath of God. The Holy Spirit of the Tree of Life in Christ Jesus and the spirit of the wrath of God are two separate spirits.
Satan is that spirit of the wrath of God. There is no wrath in Christ Jesus. In Rev. 19:13 we learn that the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ is also called The Word of God. The Word of God says in Isa. 27:4, “Fury is not in me.” So if you hear a teaching that God is angry at you, you know that the god they are referring to is NOT our Lord Jesus Christ, but Satan.
However, in John 3:36 we learn, “He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.” This means that the spirit of the wrath of God remains upon us when we do not turn from the light of darkness.
Eph. 2:1-3 reads, “And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.”
Eph. 2:1-3 outlines seven facts about our spiritual death before we are born again in our Lord Jesus Christ. In Eph. 2:1-3 we learn that before being born again:
- Believers were dead in trespasses and sins. (Part 1)
- Believers use to walk according to the course of this world. (Part 2)
- The course of this world is according to the prince of the power of the air. (Part 3)
- This spirit of the prince of the power of the air now works in the children of disobedience. (Part 4)
- Believers dwelt in the lusts of their flesh. (Part 5)
- Believers fulfilled the desires of the flesh and of the mind. (Part 6)
The Works of Wrath
The works of the spirit of the wrath of God are similar to the works of the Holy Spirit. Satan wants to be above God (Isa. 14:12; Ezek. 28:2). Satan is also known as the god of this world (2Cor. 4:4). From 1John 5:19 we also learn that Satan rules over this world.
Satan was overcome and cast from Heaven when he rebelled and warred against God (Rev. 12:7-12). He then came down to earth to work his works of destruction and death in the earth and its inhabitants.
However, from 1Chron. 29:11; Ps. 47:8; Dan. 2:21; 7:13, 14; Matt. 28:18 we learn that our Lord Jesus Christ rules over all the creation of God. Moreover, Satan’s rule in the earth is allowed by our Lord Jesus Christ, and is temporary (2Thess. 2:3, 7, 8). This is so everyone can come to the knowledge of the Glory of Jesus Christ (1Tim. 2:4; 2Pet. 3:9, 10).
Like the early Christians, we also live in the time when Satan is allowed to oppose God. Satan is allowed to exalt himself above all that is called God, and that is worshipped. Thus, he sits in the temple of God as God (2Thess. 2:4).
These works of Satan are known as the mystery of iniquity. We can understand from 2Thess. 2:7 that the mystery of iniquity was active even in the time of the Apostles.
2Thess. 2:4 means that Satan rules over the entire world as God – in every nation and culture. When your faith is not in Jesus Christ the Son of God, your faith will be controlled by Satan. The works of the spirit of wrath covers our hearts (Lam. 3:65 (YLT). In spite of this, his way seems right to man (Prov. 14:12).
A Biblical Example of Miracles by the Spirit of Wrath
The works of the spirit of wrath is the work of Satan in the life of everyone in this world. In Ex. 7:11, 12 we have an example of how the devil imitates the works and power of God. We learn from Ex. 7:11 that when the Holy Spirit through Moses demonstrated His miraculous power, the devil also showed his power with similar miracles.
The following verses of Scriptures teach how Satan shows himself to you as God:
- Ex. 7:11 teaches that the devil performed exactly the same miracles as the Holy Spirit. This is called resisting the truth (2Tim. 3:8).
- Matt. 4:1-11 teach that the devil used Scriptures to minister unto our Lord Jesus Christ. Likewise, the devil will minister unto you through the Bible.
- The Apostle Paul teaches in 2Cor. 11:14 that, “Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light”. This means that when Satan appears unto you in a dream or a vision, he will appear in light. It is only in a dream or a vision that Satan can appear unto you. (Although he may be active in our lives without us seeing him).
An “angel of light” is not an Angel of the Light of the Glory of God. An “angel of light” is an angel that appears in the light of day and the light of the sun. Satan can only appear in the light of artificial lights. Artificial lights are the light of the sun, the light of the moon and the light of manmade lights.
An Angel of God cannot appear in the light of day and the light of the sun. An Angel of God can only appear in the Light of the Glory of God. Hence, they are called “holy angels” (Luke 9:26).
A Biblical Example of Deception by the Spirit of Wrath
If you as a believer are not careful in your spiritual walk, then the spirit of wrath with successfully present himself to you as the Holy Spirit. We have an example in the Bible of how the spirit of wrath presents himself as God to the elect of God.
In 2Sam. 24:1 we read, “And again the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he moved David against them to say, Go, number Israel and Judah.” This was the spirit of the wrath of God who moved King David against Israel to count Israel. 1Chron. 21:1 is parallel to 2Sam. 24:1, and reads, “And Satan stood up against Israel, and provoked David to number Israel.”
King David’s sin was not in that he counted how many Israelites were under his rule, but rather his inability to discern between the Holy Spirit and the spirit of the wrath of God. When King David mistook the guidance of the spirit of wrath for that of the Holy Spirit, he opened himself to the spirit of wrath’s works of destruction (1Chron. 21:12-16).
The Iniquity of the Spirit of Wrath
The deception of Satan is also known as the mystery of iniquity. Hence, faith in the works that stem from Satan’s veil of death is known as the sin of iniquity. When you believe in dreams and visions and the interpretation thereof, you love and make a lie (Rev. 22:15). Thus, you work the works of iniquity. The works of iniquity are also known as the works of unrighteousness.
You are a trinity – spirit, soul and body. When you are awake, you partake in mental and physical activities with your soul and your body. When you sleep your body will be at rest.
Your soul also requires rest. Whereas your body is at rest during sleep, your soul will remain active. The activity of your soul while your body is at rest is also known as rest.
It is this rest of your soul to which our Lord Jesus Christ refers when He says in Matt. 11:28, “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” When we are not born again, our souls will rest in the shadow of Satan’s veil of death.
We see into the spiritual world with the eyes of our souls via a dream or a vision. Whenever you have a dream or a vision you are in the spirit. When in the spirit, you’ll see dreams and visions from Satan’s veil of death from your own heart. You can also be in the spirit and see dreams and visions from God.
In Rev. 1:10; 4:2; 17:3; 21:10 we learn that the Apostle John was in the spirit. When the Apostle John was in the spirit, he saw visions of the Holy Spirit of the Glory of God in Christ – not visions of his own heart.
The Iniquity of our Souls
Our souls are covered with Satan’s veil of death and subjected to the power of it (Isa. 25:7, 8; 2Cor. 3:15, 16). It is the power of Satan’s veil of death that invokes the usual dreams and visions in our hearts. For this reason we are inclined to believe in them, and they have an overwhelming impact on our souls.
When we are in the spirit during our usual dreams and visions, we see the works of Satan’s veil of death. Thus, our souls rest in the light of Satan’s veil of death. This way you are robbed of faith in the Light of Eternal life in Christ Jesus.
Rom. 3:23 teaches that all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God. This means that we have sinned because we are separated from the Glory of God by Satan’s veil of death.
All works, including dreams and visions that stem from Satan’s veil of death are the sin of iniquity. When you believe in the works invoked by Satan’s veil of death, you unwittingly sin the sin of iniquity.
The sin of iniquity is also known as:
- The sin unto death (Rom. 6:16; 1John 5:16)
- Presumptuous sin (Ps. 19:13).
- The hour of temptation (Rev. 3:10).
The sin of iniquity rules over all the people in this world (Isa. 25, 7; Rev. 3:10). It is this sin of iniquity that so easily besets us (Heb. 12:1). However, in Christ Jesus, the sin of iniquity shall not have dominion over you (Rom. 6:14).
You have to receive the Holy Spirit of the Glory of God. Thus, you’ll know the difference between Satan’s works of iniquity, including dreams and visions. Else, you will believe the dreams and visions of Satan’s veil of death to be from God.
The Iniquity of the Church of Christ
In Lam. 2:13 we read, “What thing shall I take to witness for thee? What thing shall I liken to thee, O daughter of Jerusalem? What shall I equal to thee, that I may comfort thee, O virgin daughter of Zion? For thy breach is great like the sea: who can heal thee?” The daughter of Jerusalem and the virgin daughter of Zion refer to the Church – the Bride of Christ.
Lam. 2:14 continues, “Thy prophets have seen vain and foolish things for thee: and they have not discovered thine iniquity, to turn away thy captivity; but have seen for thee false burdens and causes of banishment.” The word “seen” has been translated from the Hebrew word “châzâh”, which means to have a vision.
From Lam. 2:13, 14 we can learn that the visions of the prophets of the Church of Christ are false burdens and causes of banishment. Dreams and visions are nothing but divination of captivity against the believer thereof.
Moreover, we also learn that these dreams and visions are iniquity. Lam. 2:14 says that the prophets have not discovered the iniquity of the Bride of Christ, to turn away her captivity. My people, says the Word of Christ, are gone into captivity, because they have no knowledge. That is, they have no knowledge of the Glory of God in Jesus Christ (Isa. 5:13).
Iniquity through Lack of Knowledge
We will unwittingly sin the sin of iniquity when we do not have the knowledge of the Glory of God in Jesus Christ. Without the knowledge of the Glory of God we err in spirit by unwittingly believing the manifestations of Satan to be the works of the Holy Spirit (Heb. 3:10, 11).
The Light of the Glory of God is also known as the Shadow of the Almighty (Ps. 91:1). The light of the kingdom of Satan is called the valley of the shadow of death (Ps. 23:4; Luke 1:79). The entire world and its inhabitants sits in the valley of the shadow of death (Isa. 25:7; 1John 5:19).
Every person is born without the knowledge of the Glory of God. Hence, the Apostle Paul teaches in Rom. 3:23 that, “all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.”
This is why we learn in Acts 19:1-7 that it is vital that very believer in Jesus Christ receives the Holy Spirit upon conversion. When you receive the Holy Spirit, you will also receive the knowledge of the Glory of God in Jesus Christ. For the Holy Spirit only appears in the Glory of God. This is also what the Apostle Paul teaches in 2Cor. 4:6.
When We Err In Heart
Without the knowledge of the Glory of God we will err in heart (Ps. 95:10; Heb. 3:10). We err in heart when we mistake the dreams and visions from the veil of death for the dreams and visions of the Holy Spirit who comes in the Glory of God.
Isa. 28:7 testifies, “But they also have erred through wine, and through strong drink are out of the way; the priest and the prophet have erred through strong drink, they are swallowed up of wine, they are out of the way through strong drink; they err in vision, they stumble in judgment.” The wine referred to here is also mentioned in Rev. 14:8, 10; 17:2; 18:3.
The reason for this error is the lack of knowledge of the Glory of God in Jesus Christ. How can you believe in someone that you do not know? It is impossible to know the Holy Spirit of our Lord Jesus Christ without the knowledge of the Glory of God. This is because the Glory of God is the Holy Spirit who:
- Conceived our Lord Jesus Christ in the flesh (Luke 1:31, 35).
- Raised our Lord Jesus Christ from the dead (Rom. 4:6).
- Shines in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ (2Cor. 4:6; 2Pet. 1:19).
Ps. 78:49, 50 is an apt description of how the spirit of the wrath of God works in us when we err in spirit. Ps. 78:49, 50 reads, “He cast upon them the fierceness of his anger, wrath, and indignation, and trouble, by sending evil angels among them. He made a way to his anger; he spared not their soul from death, but gave their life over to the pestilence.”
God bless and guide you.
